A house on a landlocked site in the suburbs of Belfast. It echoes Louis Kahn’s view of the city as a series of rooms; the enclosed plot sitting as a room with a simple solid placed into it, creating a series of external rooms.
A family home for the varied requirements of three generations, the linear plan follows the east-west axis of the site, 1 room deep with strong gables and pitched roof, and an offset garden room to the east. Walls extend from the building creating a series of private landscaped courtyards, which all rooms enjoy.
Materials are from a simple restrained palette. Within the unified interior the changeable colours of the seasons, seen in the gardens and courtyards beyond, are framed through carefully proportioned openings. The form internally and externally is stripped down and frugal, yet encouraging the family to impress its personality on the spaces.
