CHRONOLOGY
The Chronology Map comprises a collection of the significant projects of the practice.
The map is set out in date order from left to right, from 1990 to the point at which it was presented at a Practice Research Symposium as a record of works and influences to that date. Subsequent to the period of research, it has been extended to 2024.
The body of work referred in the Chronology Map is co-authored. Projects between 1990-2011 are the work of Twenty Two Over Seven architects and are co-authored by its directors, Aidan McGrath, Doug Elliott and Kieran McGonigle, and projects from 2012 onwards are the work of McGonigle McGrath architects and are co-authored by its principals, Kieran McGonigle and Aidan McGrath.
Images in the central band are projects identified as being significant to the practice, located generally in the year in which they were designed. In some cases the design phase of projects has extended over a number of years and these are highlighted with a lighter background.
There is a sparsity of images relating to the years 1990 to 2000 due to the some of the material being inaccessible, although some of the more successful projects of that period are represented.
Along the top, and following the same date order, are images of influences, interests and study, both physical and academic. Areas of personal study are also included, a dissertation on design of the Woodland Cemetery, investigations into traditional Irish architecture, a long term development and study into proportion, and studies of particular buildings. Also the influences of modern graphic and abstract painters, the compositional photography of Aidan McGrath, and found forms, figures in the landscape often observed on repeated journeys and which become established in mental space and find resonance with the work.
